Workplace Lactation

Returning to work outside of the home does not mean that your back-to-work patients have to stop breastfeeding. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act amended the Fair Labor Standards Act to require that employers provide space and time for nursing mothers to express milk at work. Further support through workplace lactation programs can help your back-to-work patients, especially hourly employees, continue to breastfeed.

Workplace Lactation Toolkit

With support from Abbott Nutrition, Corporate Voices for Working Families and Working Mother Media have teamed up with a select group of employers to develop Workplace Lactation Programs: Good for Working Families, Good for Business This initiative offers employers what they need most: marketing ideas, case examples, and a toolkit of materials to extend workplace lactation programs to benefit hourly and low-wage workers.

The toolkit contains:

  • A guide to creating workplace support for nursing mothers;
  • Worksheets and checklists to assess the employer's needs, set up nursing or privacy rooms, and to evaluate the program's success;
  • Breastfeeding fact sheets and education materials in multiple languages;
  • Posters and talking points for communicating with employees.
